Congratulations to Ruben Espinosa of Delray Medical Center For being this year’s SFAMI, BMET of the Year…

Ruben graduated from Colegio Juvenal Cano high school in Colombia in 1978.  He came to Miami in 1979 and began working in a wood mill cutting pickets for fences.  He later went to work for a drywall finishing company and moved to Chicago in 1981.

While in Chicago he worked in a restaurant and attended Truman College.  In 1983 he returned to Miami and worked for an import/export company.  In 1985 he moved to Palm Beach County and worked at the PGA Sheraton Resort.  During that time he attended Palm Beach Community College.

From 1986 to 1992, Ruben worked for Linde Homecare, a subsidiary of Union Carbide.  His duties included the repair and service of portable liquid oxygen containers used by COPD patients and providing in-service on the use and care of these units.  He also worked on Pulmo-aid, other CPAP units, and electrical beds.

He received certification from Devilbiss for repairing oxygen concentrators.

In 1992, Ruben left the profession and, using the money he saved, went back to school to attempt to complete the electrical engineering degree he had started after high school.   With his funds depleting, Ruben realized he would need to do something to restore income and continue his education.  He purchased a small tow truck with the idea that he could do a few tows per day and study in between.

Before long the tow business occupied all of his time.  He purchased a small tow company.  He became familiar with the Department of Transportation procedures and OSHA regulations.  After 13 years, he sold this very successful company to go back to school and pursue what he really wanted to do.

In October of 2005, Ruben became a partner at Green Building Technologies Construction where he advised and implemented green building technologies on new construction and remodeling projects.  He was also responsible for the scheduling and coordination of sub –contractors.

All along, Ruben continued his education.  He attended Miami-Dade Community College in Miami and Medvance Institiute in West Palm Beach.  He interned at Bethesda Memorial Hospital under the guidance of the Biomedical Engineering Manager and received his Associates of Science Degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology and Information Technology in March of 2011.

Immediately after receiving his degree, he was hired by Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach.  In December of 2014, Ruben was hired by Delray Medical Center as a Biomedical Engineer.

Ruben holds certifications from the following companies:  Devilbiss for oxygen concentrators and Pulmoaide units, Philips Healthcare for the V60 ventilator, Drager Medical for the Evita XL, Evita XL Neo ventilators, Maquet/Datascope for the CS100/CS300 Intra-Aortic Balloon pumps, and Dornoch-Zimmer Medical Sysytems for their surgical waste management systems.  He is also a Trained Medical Interpreter under the Glades Initiative in Palm Beach County.

Ruben is happily married and has 2 children.  In his off time, Ruben coaches in a children’s soccer league and enjoys spending time with his family.
